Quick Start Guide for Faculty
First things to do
- Log on to your ANGEL web site at http://angel.msu.edu using your MSUNet ID and password.
After logging on you will be in your "Home" area of ANGEL. From here you can manage your calendar, bookmarks, and files, and get access to your ANGEL courses and groups.
- Enter your personal information into ANGEL.
- Starting from Home, click on Preferences
icon in the left-hand menu. - Under General User Settings, click on "Personal Information."
- Fill out the form in the "User Profile Editor," then click "Save."
TIP: Any field you leave blank will simply not appear to other users. Information you say is Viewable By "Everyone" will be seen by students and others when they look for your contact information in a course or group.
- Choose a "Personal Theme" for My Page.
- Starting from Home, click on Preferences
icon in the left-hand menu. - Under General User Settings, click on "Theme Selector"
- The default theme is called Beaumont. Explore the other possibilities, if you wish, and after selecting a theme click on Apply.
TIP: You can return to Home at any time by clicking on
icon in the left-hand menu. - Choose how you want to handle your ANGEL mail.
- Starting from Home, click on Preferences
icon in the left-hand menu. - Under General User Settings, click on System Settings.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and choose how and whether you want
your ANGEL mail forwarded to an Internet mail account such as your MSU
Mail account.
TIP: You should probably consult our documentation on Activating Your Courses. It describes in detail what to do if you can't see the courses in which you are the instructor of record, and how to correct the situation. So if you can't proceed with the next step because you can't see your course(s) under My ANGEL Courses, the documentation is a good first stop.
- Enter a course from Home.
- Under the My ANGEL Courses heading, click on the course name. You can create a development course to try out the features of ANGEL, if you wish. "Development courses" are for developing content only, and not for use with regular MSU courses.
- Choose a course theme.
- Enter a course (see above).
- Click on the Manage tab at the top right of the page.
- Under the Course Settings heading, choose Course Theme Selector.
- Explore the options and choose a theme, and click on Apply.
TIP: You can set a different theme for every course, if you wish. The default theme is called Beaumont.
- Choose settings for your course.
- Enter a course.
- Click on the Manage tab at the top of the page.
- Under the Course Settings heading, choose General Course Settings.
- Choose the Begin and End dates, course Title, and Instructor Name.
- A real course can be enabled so students can see it by setting Member Access to "All Members."
TIP: In an MSU course you would use the Begin and End dates, as well as the Member Access option to control when students can view the course content.
ESSENTIAL TIP: If you allow your course to be viewed by the ANGEL search engine, be sure to set access levels for all of your course materials, including discussion boards and chat rooms, so that outsiders cannot use them. Setting "Viewable By" permissions to Students or Members will accomplish this.
- Explore other ANGEL documentation and training options on the ANGEL Help page.
